Ok, there's a bit of a story involved in this, but most of the details are unimportant. The main idea is this: last summer, I came across an extra electric guitar at a yard sale, which I bought for the amplifier that game with it. Now that I know a bit more about guitars, I'm interested in re-making this one.

Since I already have it apart to repaint it, I figured I might as well upgrade the hardware in it. I don't know much about what it has, but I do know this guitar is rather old. On the back of the pickguard, it has a date on it, and I believe the year reads somewhere in the 1980's. [the last digit, and half of the third, are cut off >_>]. The pick-ups are a single, large magnet, though there are two of them, with a three-way toggle switch. There's also four knobs; one volume and one tone knob for each pickup.

I'm wondering if anyone here may have a suggestion as to what I might want to buy to upgrade the hardware in this guitar. I've never customized an electric guitar before, so I don't know much at all about what does what, so if you could tell me a bit of why you think I should buy whatever, that'd be helpful [ie, tonal reasons, playability reasons, etc].

I do not have pictures of the guitar or the hardware as of right now, but if it is helpful, I can have pictures up within 24 hours. I can also get any model numbers or whatnot that I can actually find. Lemme know what you need to know, and I'll try to find it. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks n_n

Ya mean besides effect pedals and shit?

I don't really know a lot about guitars but I do have a truckload of friends who have their own bands. I'll ask them once I get back to manila

Yeah. I'm good with pedals, processors, and whatnot. It's the actual electronics INSIDE the guitar that I need a hand with. I don't know what HALF of it is, or what it does. What I do know is they can be switched and adjusted. Pickups make a big difference in the type of sound, but I don't know what type of pickups these are, or if they can be replaced [rather than an individual magnet for each string, the pickups are one large magnet for all six]. Along with that, I don't know if I can replace the electronics which adjust tone, volume, etc. and if I can, what to replace them with.

If you can ask one of them, it'd be real helpful :D

Wow. Hahahah. I'm in a band and I'm a guitarist as well.

The main reason it seems people want to change pickups is because they heard or read that [insert famous guitarist] uses said pickup or brand of pickups. So the guitar's stock pickups don't sound too hot, and you decide a pickup is the only route. Don't get me wrong; new pickups usually help. But there are a few things to consider.

You can slap the best pickups and knobs in the world in your guitar but if it's a crap guitar then why bother?

If the guitar has an enormous amount of sentimental value, like it was your first electric, then it can be tempting to go ahead and do this. But sometimes, it won't work for you.

Putting in a new pickup is not a solution to fixing all your tone woes, and the vast, vast bulk of the people we listen to on CD are running a 150,000php+ guitar through a 60,000+ amp into a 100,000+ studio effects rig (bullshit diba? mahal mashado). Why not just buy guitar FX?. I had a Zoom 707 II before and it worked pretty well for my Rockstar electric guitar (it's a local brand).

Anyway, keep in mind that a lot of professional musicians use custom made instruments that only physically resemble their mass-made equivilant.

But still, if you're really good, you don't need fancy guitar accessories anymore. All you need are your guitar skillz, a drummer, a bassist, a vocalist and a live audience! Rock on!
