There's a bit of a story to this. Suffice it to say, last summer I bought an electric guitar at a yard sale for the amplifier that came with it. Now, I have had the idea that I want to re-paint this guitar.

I am wondering if anyone here has ever painted a guitar before. I intend to use spray paint to do this, since I lack easy access to a professional spray gun. However, I do have a friend who has one, so if need be, I can use one.

If anyone here has any suggestions to a first-time guitar painter, or suggestions for a design for the guitar, any help would be appreciated x3

I'll try to get pictures up when it's finished, and pictures of it as it is right now, if need be.

Also, for kicks, if you've ever done anything like this, why not provide pictures of your handiwork? n_n

Oh. I haven't even bought a guitar yet. >_<

But I think I can give suggestions..
-For your design, I think you should pick one that sorta makes you think: "I'd never change this design. Not ever." 'cause there's a possibility that you might get bored with what you have now and decide to change it. I don't know if you could.

-Maybe you could paint your guitar the way cars are painted. You know, put some tape according to the pattern/design, paint, let it dry then peel the tape off. XD

-As for the spray paint, I don't have any idea about its quality and whatnot, but I do know that (some) spray paint tend to fade when regularly "rubbed" (my brother re-painted some gadgets here before and with constant use, the color faded >.< ); I think that goes for the back part of the guitar's neck, if you decide to paint it.

There. ^^ Hope that's useful, at least. XD

hey Jory, I suggest that when you do your guitar with spray paint as medium, the color will look bland. Of course, you need the gloss look and feel for it so I suggest a primer before spraying away. Added fact, it'll easily rot your guitar if you go ahead spraying whatever available spray paint that you have.

Just another heads up dude. :)

Haha, I've read a little bit about how this is done. I know enough to use a primer layer first :D

Also, I'll be using a lacquer, or something like that, to give it a glossier look and make the design more durable. It's naturally what one would do with a guitar. n_n

Sand-polished? I have NO idea what that is....

And you're sure this is necessary? My grandfather's a house painter, so he'd probably not only know what it is, but how to do it...Still, none of the guides I've read said anything about that. They just said to use a very fine grit sand paper to make it so smooth you couldn't even feel the wood grain.

My brother has a guitar, it's not really fully customized but he tweaks it around and stuff. May I ask what's the brand of your electric guitar?
I don't know much about painting so...
On suggesting the paint design, you have to pick a base color, dark or light, and plain or graphic. I prefer dark base color and bright graphic. But any form can be nice as long as it pleases the eye.
Here are some pics I found on the net:

Awesome flame effect but I think it's hard to paint

This green one's nice, you have to match the head and body paint.

yes, that's right. Sand-polish's a referrence in model-kit/resin or diorama building and so, I just used the term. Just make sure to smoothen up the body so it'll be clean and shiny before applying glossy paint.

windwalker: The guitar is a Silvertone. I'm not completely sure if they still make these >_> I know I've found excerpts from catalogs from 1964 on this particular model, though I think this one was made sometime in the '80's.

Here's a picture of a guitar that looks just like the one I have, though not beaten up, and a yellow-ish color instead of the red that mine is. This is also where I got the catalog excerpt from.

Noah: Ok, so just use a really fine grit sandpaper on it to make it real smooth? x3 I can handle that, no problem.

For some reason the term 'sand polishing' brought a sand blaster to mind.

Nice guitar! I used to own a Washburn XB 100 series bass guitar.
