A place where the four-eyed and the bookworms can gather. In The Library we share the literature that we have had the pleasure of flipping through. We review, recommend and/or critic any literary work we have read, whether it be a novel or an article, foreign or local, fiction or non-fiction.

And to start off, I give you INTERWORLD

Image

Plot
Interworld tells the story of Joey Harker, an ordinary boy in every aspect except for the fact that he is without any sense of direction... and that he can "walk" between parallel worlds. The books follows his adventures as he traverses the Altiverse and runs from organizations of magic and technology as they seek to obtain Joey's "special talents".

Review
The book was written by Neil Gaiman and Michael Reaves. Yours truly, being a Gaimaniac had impulsively took the book from the shelf straight to the cashier. In hindsight, perhaps I should have given it a bit more thought before I took out my wallet. Maybe it was the hype (Neil actually came to the country to promote this book) or maybe it was my faith in Neil but whatever it was I was left disappointed. :(

The book is a quick read. A person can finish the book in just over an hour, bookworms can finish this in just over half an hour, maybe less. Yes, it is that short. But what I have yet to tell is that this is a Young Adult's book and that may be the reason why it is what it is: a quick read that used a familiar theme propelled in fame by the authors' names

My biggest complain though about the book is that I felt that it needed to have the reader explore more into the life of the characters. I felt a lack of immersion in the protagonist's life and experiences; a feat which could have been achieved by including MORE details. But because the book was so short, it had been unable to do that and thus gives you a hanging feeling, leaving you wanting more.

All in all, its an OK read, just nothing special though

I give it a 4.5/10

I knew it.

There is a reason why that book is scattered all over the bookstores without people buying them.

Coraline is a Young Adult book too but it's still awesome! XD

Will write my book review next time. ^____^

Ugh. Interworld was not my cup of tea either.

Now, Coraline... now, that's a book. It's kind of chilling in a way. My first reaction was (half-way into the book): Wait, is this really a kid's book? XD

Cell by Stephen King

Image

Plot:

On October 1st, a signal called "The Pulse" is transmitted via cellphone network to people who had the misfortune of using their cellphones when the said signal was released. "The Pulse", once heard, instantly strips any cellphone user of their reason and humanity, turning them into crazy, homicidal creatures, out for blood--- particularly those who were lucky enough not to use or answer their cellphones. In proper Stephen King fashion, a rag-tag group of normal human beings set off on a quest to find the source of "The Pulse", to find lost loved ones, and find a way to beat (or at least escape) the phenomenon.

Review:

I don't know if anybody would agree with me, but I think that if there is one bad thing about sticking to the works of one author, it is that you'd tend to eventually pick out a pattern in his/her novels that show up in each book. In other words, the author's future works become more predictable. In this case, this book reminded me of The Mist among King's other novellas/novels. You know that one of the main characters is going to die in the most colorful way possible, you know that there would be gore and violence galore, and you know that most probably the book would end with a twist... (but you know that it is these same reasons why you stick to the same author in the first place. XD)

However, King's saving grace is his imagination. Mindless zombie-like creatures, normal people dying here and there--- sure, that's typical of him. But throwing in cellphones--- technology in general---- as the cause of such a predicament that's pretty supernatural is pretty ingenious. I mean, after reading this book, I was immediately suspicious of my cellphone. XD

Rating:
9 out of 10, because I'm not usually a fan of open endings... but we're talking about the King here. lol~

Just finished

Image

Plot:
Crowley is a demon who has been living the glitzy life for two thousand years. Aziraphale is an angel who has been collecting rare books since after he left God's Garden. Both have settled on earth and have grown fond of our world. Now the two of them are facing a little problem that could affect their lives.

Armageddon is coming.

The book follows Crowley and Aziraphale as they try to, discreetly, avert the coming of the End of the World. Frogs are raining from the sky. The Four Horsemen of the apocalypse ride. And the Antichrist is switched at birth. :D

Review:
Another collaboration and this time, Neil teams up with Discworld father Terry Pratchett. I seem to be developing the habit of picking books co-written by Neil. Hahaha :D

Good Omens is a comedy. By the first few chapters you'll notice how different the novel is from other Gaiman books so Gaimaniacs might be surprised at first. For Gaimaniacs, all I ask of you is to give the book a chance. The beginning may seem slow and drab a bit but after a while things pick up.

But despite that, I am not saying that Good Omens is an awesome read. It may have Gaiman and Pratchett on the cover but it isn't something that would make you go HOOPLAH! all of a sudden. But what we have to take into account is that Good Omens was written in a time when Neil Gaiman wasnt the Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett wasn't the Terry Pratchett.

In the end, the book was a nice read. But that's all it is. Nice

I give it a 6/10

A drab beginning isn't new to Gaiman-work, imo. Neverwhere had a slow start, but I suppose that's how he sets his readers up for the action that would follow.

A comedy, from Gaiman? Interesting. That I need to see.:)

Yes, actually, I would.^________^ I'd go as far as to say that I liked it better than American Gods. American Gods had a fantastic storyline, but I just couldn't bring myself to sympathize with the lead character. It was like he was just there to move the plot along, no depth of character. He was exactly what his name suggested: a shadow of a bigger figure.

Neverwhere on the otherhand, made me feel for the lead. It kept me on edge, mostly because it kept me thinking of how the hell he's going to get out of the mess he's in, and that it made me feel like I couldn't trust anybody around the character. It keeps you guessing.

When you've read the book, tell me how it goes?:)
